UKMT (United Kingdom Mathematics Trust) is a math competition aimed at students across the United Kingdom.
UKMT is a popular math competition for students attending British international schools.
While the AMC awards prizes only to the top 5% of students,
the UKMT awards Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals to the top 40% of students based on their scores.
Therefore, if you are attending a British-based school, the UKMT is a math competition worth considering.
UKMT Hosts Three Types of Exams
To give an example of SMC (Senior Mathematical Challenge), it is known award Bronze, Gold, Silver medals to the top 66% students. However, the competition does not end there. The top 1,000 students are eligible to compete in the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1, and the top 6,000 students are given the opportunity to participate in the Senior Kangaroo competition.
The 1,000 students who compete in the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 will solve 6 problems over the course of 3 hours and 30 minutes. The top 20 students will receive a Gold medal, the top 30 students will receive a Silver medal, and the top 50 students will receive a Bronze medal.
Students who rank in the Top 100 of the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 (BMO1) are also given the opportunity to compete in the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 2 (BMO2).
It is true that the UKMT is often considered as an easier competition to win compared to the AMC, but reaching the levels of BMO1 and BMO2 is by no means an easy journey.
At The King's Academy, our UKMT-specialized instructors guide students through this challenging journey.
